Having the ability to tap into our intuition is one of the most powerful assets we can possess. It provides us with wisdom unique to our journey, it always seeks to serve us in our highest good and it allows us to take action outside of what we might think is rationally possible.
So why do so many people struggle with their intuition?
I always aliken intuition to a muscle. The more you use it, the more you flex it, the stronger it grows. So if you are not accustomed to tuning into or receiving your intuition, initially you may find it difficult to ‘hear’. But just as when you strengthen your muscles through repeated practice, conditioning and training – you can do the same with your intuition. Just like a muscle, the stronger it gets, the less exertion you will need to apply in order to get the same results.
I’d like to share with you 4 qualities of intuition, followed by a recent example of where I followed my intuition and it led me somewhere I had not conceived as rationally possible.
Four Key Qualities of Intuition:
- It’s unique to everyone in how it shows up – intuition shows up in its own unique language for each and every person. So it’s important to take time to develop an understanding of how your intuition speaks to you. Some known ways you can receive your intuition include – gut feelings in the body, flashes in the mind, symbols or pictures, as a story. Some people receive it as a third-party voice or through signs they see around them. Sometimes it’s a combination of several of these things.
Do you know how your intuition speaks to you? Take a moment to think about this.
- It is receptive – feminine (alpha brain) – we receive our intuition through our alpha brain. This is why things that relax our brain state and take us out of our beta (working/masculine) brain, help us to receive our intuition. Some examples that help us to get into our alpha brain include meditation, free body movement, fractal patterns, connection to nature, and breathwork. It’s great to have a few tools at your disposal, for when the need to tap into your intuition arises in different scenarios.
- It whispers (it’s a lighter vibration) – which means we need to create time to ‘hear’ it – stillness; especially when we are first building a relationship with our intuition. When we are serious, heavy, and down, it is actually harder to receive our intuition. So having fun, being a bit playful, and keeping things lighters actually aids our intuition coming in. So not only is it better for your overall health to have a good laugh and see the lighter things in life, but it is also great for receiving your internal wisdom!
- It’s fuelled by our imagination – you’ve probably heard the phrase, if you can dream it, you can do it. This is very much the case with intuition. We often dismiss our wildest dreams and visions because they seem impossibly outlandish, out of reach and unrealistic. But if we have the courage to sit with our intuition, it will allow us to see what is truly possible (and being infinite beings, there is NO limit to what we can create – how cool is that!). So when we step into our intuition, we are literally using our imagination to ‘make it up’. The next part, which is often where people stumble, is to take steps to bring it to life.
It’s also important to remember that intuition and the movement of the universe, does not operate in linear time. Once we have a set vision, we are truly anchored into it and we are taking one step at a time – it is not a matter of whether, it’s a matter of when it will come to life. Quantum time works very differently to linear, remembering this helps in not becoming disheartened when things aren’t playing out as fast as we would like in our ‘human’ timelines. Following your intuition also required courage, because it often beckons you to walk a path you might never have walked before. It might ask you to do things differently to the people around you, it might require you to do something without having any idea what’s going to happen along the way. It definitely asks you to take action without worrying about the ‘how’.
As many of you might know, we made plans as a family to move to Niue in 2022 – a small island in the South Pacific where I was born. Due to covid and other circumstances beyond our control, we ended up following a rather unlikely path that led us to 12 months in the south-west of WA. During this time, we have dove into new friendships, healing modalities, experiences, and adventures that I now understand to be an integral part of our preparation to get to the island.
We have now been called to head back to Perth for an interim period, before heading to Niue. Although to many, it doesn’t make rational sense, I understand that we have been guided to Perth for a reason, and it is still part of our journey to the island (it just isn’t linear!). It suddenly occurred to me as I washed the dishes (hello intuition), that I need to go back to Perth to continue to integrate what I’ve learned whilst down south, and I can’t see what other preparation is required, whilst safely holed up down south. So whilst many might be questioning our motives and the practicality of what we’re doing, I know we simply need to trust that we are being guided and that we will end up exactly where we need to be.
